1950s: Béla Barényi and the Crumple Zone
The modern era of automotive safety began in 1952 when Béla Barényi, a Hungarian engineer working for Mercedes-Benz, filed a patent for a “rigid passenger cell with front and rear crumple zones.” This revolutionary design, introduced in the 1959 W111 “Fintail” models, was the first time a production car was designed to absorb impact energy in a controlled manner. The passenger compartment remained rigid, while the front and rear sections were designed to collapse, dissipating crash energy away from the occupants. 1970s: The Airbag and Seatbelt Tensioner

The first production airbags were introduced in 1981 as an option in the S-Class. Simultaneously, Mercedes pioneered the seatbelt tensioner (also known as a pretensioner), which pulls the seatbelt tight in the event of a crash, ensuring the occupant is securely held in place. In 1986, the company introduced the world’s first passenger-side airbag, completing the dual-front-airbag system that would become standard globally.
1978: The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
In 1978, Mercedes-Benz introduced the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to the market, working in partnership with Bosch. This technology allowed drivers to maintain steering control during emergency braking by preventing the wheels from locking up. 1995: Electronic Stability Control (ESP)
In 1995, Mercedes-Benz revolutionized vehicle safety once again with the introduction of Electronic Stability Control (ESP) in the S-Class. ESP uses sensors to detect when a car is about to lose traction—such as during a skid—and applies brakes to individual wheels to bring the car back on course. Studies have shown that ESP prevents up to 80% of all skidding accidents. It is arguably the most important safety invention since the seatbelt.
